Creating WP7 Tile and Application Icons for FREE with Paint.NET

In this post I am going to talk about how to make a Windows Phone 7 Tile Icon using Paint.NET: a FREE image and photo editor.
What is Paint.NET?
Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for Windows. It has all the features that you will need when designing Icons,Images, etc. Some of the cool supported features are:
- All standard Image editing features
- Layers
- Special Effects
- Powerful Tools for drawing
- Unlimited History
NOTE: Paint.NET is a free tool released under Creative Commons license. So you are free to build whatever icons/images you prefer and use them in your WP7 apps!
Building WP7 Tile Icon using Paint.NET
To begin with lets first mention some of the certification requirements related to Tile and Application icons:

First download and install Paint.NET from its official web site: http://www.getpaint.net/ .After successfully installing the tool just start it: ![]()
The default StartUp screen should look like:
We will use the following windows:
Here are the steps of creating a custom Tile icon
Step1: Go to File->New and select 173x173 size. Then press OK.
Step2: Add 6 New Empty Layers as shown in the next screen shot:
Step3: We will use different gradient tools to create 6 kind of Backgrounds(for demonstration purpose only) for our Tile Icon:![]()
Step4: Create one more Layer. We will use the "Line" tool
to create an Icon drawing. In our case we will draw the WindowsPhoneGeek logo.
Step5: Select Icon Layer and Background Layer as demonstrated below. (optionally you can select different background if you prefer just check the desired layer and you will see the result)
Step6:Go to File->Save as and change the type of the saved file to "Png" :
Step7: Select OK button and then "Flatten" to save the image.
Step8: Here is how our newly created Tile icon looks like:
Step9: In order to generate the same Application Icon just go to Images->Resize and select 62x62:
Step10: Add the newly created images to your Windows Phone 7 project. Here is how the final result should look like:

Nice post guys. I am also using Paint.NET for Images and for lots of other things. This tool is really one of the best FREE tools available.

There are lots of other FREE tools but the only 100% sure is Paint.NET. One more thing is that you can use it without bothering for licences and such things. Vote up for this post!

Good howto, but your tile breaks Microsofts design guidelines. Don't use black backgrounds! I realise this is just an example, but some people may think this is acceptable.

This is a great to create custom live tiles, but can we link actions to it? as in, If I want to link my To DO list from calendar to this as a live tile push notification. is that possible?
